I think kickstarter.com is a good idea for kickstarter.com and credit/debit card companies.
The basic idea is for someone to
1. Put together an idea
2. Bring their own friends and family to pay for it
3. Pay 5% for listing your project in kickstarter.com and 3.5%-5% to payment processors
4. Promote kickstarter.com through their facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter connections
Otherwise, how on earth anyone can decide to put their dime in the hope that they will get something that is nothing more than a promise and an idea.
